Študija vzgojne psihologije lahko učiteljem in bodočim učiteljem pomaga, da opozorijo na njihovo razumevanje otrok in mladostnikov ter postanejo učinkovitejši pri svojih nalogah. Ta dvojni namen in znanost sta razvoj in uporaba načel psihologije z namenom boljšega poučevanja.
     
Izobraževalni psihologi pri razvijanju svojih načel v poučevanju imajo dolžnost odnosa z vsemi področji psihologije, zlasti učnih težav, razvoja otrok in mladine, socialne psihologije, individualnih razlik in duševnega zdravja. Na teh področjih so razvila načela, ki se lahko uporabljajo pri vseh funkcijah, zlasti pri poučevanju.
 
Ker se izobraževalne potrebe in izobraževalne teorije spreminjajo s spremembami v družbi, morajo izobraževalni psihologi vedno znova preučevati svoja načela in prilagoditi svoje koncepte spremembam, ki se zgodijo.
