Ljudje, ki so telesno prizadeti (pohabljeni, slepi, gluhi) se pogosto pritožujejo, da se počutijo osamljene in osamljene ter da se drugi ljudje izogibajo. Zdi se, da so ta občutja, na žalost, povezana z bolečo realnostjo. Nekateri strokovnjaki pravijo, da se ljudje v določeni meri izogibajo telesno prizadetim. Če bodo imeli možnost izbire, bodo navadno ohranjali večjo razdaljo, kot bi jih imeli pri nein hendikepiranih osebah. Običajno se bodo izognili sedenju ob hendikepirani osebi. Le s nepričakovanimi situacijami bodo skupaj s hendikepiranimi. Zaradi tega vedenja imajo hendikepirani občutek, da so drugačni.
