Zdaj je AIDS postal izbruh bolezni. Ocenjuje se, da je AIDS okužil 38,6 milijona ljudi po vsem svetu. V januarju 2006, UNAIDS v sodelovanju z oceno Svetovne zdravstvene organizacije, ki je AIDS povzročil smrt več kot 25 milijonov ljudi, saj je bila prva priznala 5. junija 1981. Tako je ta bolezen je ena od najbolj uničujočih epidemij v zgodovini. AIDS naj bi v letu 2005 povzročil smrti od 2,4 do 3,3 milijona, od tega več kot 570 000 otrok. Tretjina teh smrti se pojavlja v podsaharski Afriki, kar upočasni gospodarsko rast in uničuje moč človeških virov tam. Antiretrovirusno zdravljenje lahko dejansko zmanjša smrtnost in resnost okužbe z virusom HIV, vendar dostop do takega zdravljenja ni na voljo v vseh državah.Socialna kazen za ljudi z virusom HIV / aidsom, na splošno težja v primerjavi z ljudmi z drugimi smrtonosnimi boleznimi.
